Penis envy

Penis is one of the most important presence in a man's life. And sometimes in a woman's life as well.

Therefore, across time he was in the spot light of many sciences, getting more attention than the brain got in the first centuries of our aware existence.

Tribes used to glorify penis, either by statues grotesquely augmenting the size of the penis, either by rituals of worshiping the penis (called lingam) in Hinduism and other cultures as well.

There are museum erected in it's honor, there are books and studies dedicated to the penis as well as psychological theories meant to explain the psychology...of the penis.

Freud was one of the pioneers in the psychology of sexuality, the first to talk openly about penis and he come up with a controversial theory about penis envy.

In this psychoanalytical context penis envy refers to women, who in certain phases of their psychosexual development realizes that something is missing between her legs: a penis. No, not in the way you think, but that she realizes she doesn't have a penis like the man and she becomes envy of him.

Well, this theory is kind of outdated now and somehow an expression of the misogynistic view of the world that puts penis on a pedestal where we, humans, are the slaves of his dictatorship.

Is not quite far from truth though but we evolved to learn to control our instincts, therefore penis still holds a big place in our overall satisfaction but other things got in the picture as well.

Nowadays, penis envy refers in a larger consensus to the envy of a male over another male's penis. You know, that irrational feeling you have in your guts when you peak accidentally (or not) to another man's endowment and notice a gifted penis.

Called also "small penis syndrome" this envy is based on a more or less conscious idea that bigger penis is a symbol of masculinity, success, validation and charisma.

Data leaked in the recent decades through media, books and movies which epitomized a big penis as a winning ticket to more sexual satisfaction, dominance and power. And I must admit that the competition out there is pretty hard these days.

Of course, penis envy will be the result of a comparison made more or less accurately between your penis and another man's penis. Although, men can have pretty erroneous representations about what a penis normal size would be.

They either underestimate their size or overestimate it. Reality seems to elude us in a mysterious way when it comes about the size of our penis.

To me, penis envy seems a bit like that obsession women have with weight - as much as they want to be thin, we want to be big, dominant and winning any competition involving penis dimensions.

One good thing about scientists is that they like to make statistics. I like numbers, they're music to my years. And I am quite happy when I hear that a survey by sexologists showed that many men who believed that their penis was of inadequate size had actually average-sized penises (we talked more about penis average size here)

That process of underestimation was due to 2 factors:

1. The phenomenon called 'foreshortening' obtained from looking down - that will lead to make wrong estimation about their own penis size compared to others.

2. The accumulation of fat at the base of the penis that can "eat" away a generous portion of your penis size.

As much as you wish for, there is no escape but to confront your own perception about your penis and more important, the reality of your sexual endowment and performance.

I know that this are very sensitive issues and most men prefer to ignore them or think that it doesn't matter, that a bigger car, designer clothing or a good social status will cover his insatisfaction with his penis size.

The truth is that it doesn't work like that. Subconsciously, the penis envy and insatisfaction will sabotage the whole construct of your personality, jeopardizing vital aspects of your life: relationships, career, self confidence.
